When a loved one is no longer able to care for themselves, it becomes clear that it is a life- changing experience for the entire family. These life-changing experiences are most often felt by the primary care provider, who is normally a spouse, child or parent. Family caregivers may not think of themselves as care providers or recognize their new role as care givers, but as family members begin helping with visits to the doctor, taking over financial responsibilities, or assisting a loved one with grooming or eating, they are fulfilling their new role as a family caregiver. To help family caregivers provide the best care possible, Oasis In-Home Care has developed a new Family Caregiver Program. We feel that preparing with knowledge is power!
A family caregiver is defined as someone who provides assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADL), such as helping a loved one with getting in and out of bed and chairs, dressing, bathing, grooming, feeding, toileting, and mobility around the home. Family caregivers also provide assistance with other Activities of Daily Living (ADL), such as providing transportation, house cleaning, grocery shopping, preparing meals, coordinating appointments, managing finances and giving medications. Many family caregivers can benefit from understanding how this role affects their lives in the long term and how to ask for help.
In addition to attending the hands on training in our new caregiver lab, family caregivers may also find helpful information in the Caregiver Support Guide that will be provided to them during the training. Oasis In-Home Care also provides a space for a Family Caregiver Support Group to meet on the 3rd of every month at 5:30pm in the new office building on Memorial Drive. The support group and training opportunities are designed to help them cope with their new role and responsibilities.
A caregiver lab provides non-medical, hands-on, assistance training free of charge. Our lab has a hospital bed, mechanical lift, walker, wheel chair, 3 in 1 portable commode, gate belts, and other tools we use to help an aging or debilitated loved one in the home. Many of the medical equipment needs in the lab were met by donations from Superior Medical Supply in Clarksville, TN. We also have educational resources available including information on Dementia & Alzheimer’s disease, body mechanics, infection control, personal care, and more.
Knowing how to safely transfer someone without injury to them or the caregiver is very important. Occupied bed changes, proper standby assist, operating a mechanical lift, understanding the dynamics of a disease, are all parts of being a family caregiver. Oasis In-Home Care is proud to be one of the few in home care agencies providing high quality in-house training in the Deborah A. Phillips Caregiver Training Lab. Each month, Oasis In-Home Care will conduct the Caregiver Training Program for Oasis caregivers and family caregivers. The training will take place in our conference room and training lab. Using a 105 pound medical manikin, our training lab provides hands-on experience for caregivers in need of knowledge to assist their loved ones.
The Caregiver Training Lab will offer ongoing training four times per month for Oasis Caregivers and the Family Caregiver Program. The training offered to Family Caregivers will always be FREE OF CHARGE.
Deborah “Debbie” A. Phillips was a dedicated mother, friend and confidant that endured a long term illness and eventually succumbed to its effects. During this time, her family learned quickly what a difference a dedicated and knowledgeable caregiver can make in not only the life of the sick individual, but also their family. Learning to care for her was intimidating but we found reassurance from the caregivers that we learned from daily. The experiences we had with her, guided the owner, Michelle Mullins, RN, to open Oasis In-Home Care and we dedicate our Caregiver Training Lab in her memory and honor. She will always be an inspiration.
We have recently opened our new office located at 1823 Memorial Drive, Clarksville, TN, 37043 and would like to invite everyone to stop by to meet our staff and experience the caregiver lab for yourself. We look forward to continuing a positive relationship with our clients and caregivers, and we are available to answer any questions you may have, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
